Conservative Media vs. Progressive Media
By Cenk Uygur

The NY Post is run by Rupert Murdoch to further his conservative agenda. It loses $50 million a year. The Washington Times is run by Rev. Sun Myung Moon to further his conservative agenda. By some estimates Rev. Moon has sunk $2 to $3 billion into it and it has never been profitable. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is run by Richard Mellon Scaife to further his conservative agenda. It loses $20 to $30 million a year.

The Weekly Standard used to be owned by Murdoch to further his conservative agenda but is now owned by Philip Anschutz to further his conservative agenda. Either way, it loses $5 million a year.

Do you know how many people read The Weekly Standard? They have a circulation of 80,000. To put it bluntly, that's pathetic. That means almost no one reads it. Its main purpose is not to turn a profit but to spread Republican propaganda in the guise of news. Conservative billionaires use these publications to give legitimacy to their political opinions, but don't actually expect to make any money for them. They're an investment, in propaganda. But without their wealthy benefactors, these publications would immediately go bankrupt and cease to exist.

On the other hand, progressive media has now built a self-sustaining business model on the web that makes money because people actually read the websites or watch the shows. I can't speak for other progressive outlets (Huffington Post for one seems to have a very healthy valuation). But I can speak for us. The Young Turks is a progressive web show that is popular and profitable all on its own. The Young Turks now has numbers that make conservative outlets look like a joke by comparison.

In fact, today the show crossed the 100 million views barrier on You Tube. The Young Turks now has 100,106,994 views on our You Tube channel alone. This doesn't count views on our own website and the dozens of other outlets we're on, including Sirius XM Radio. Last month we had 7,289,549 views on our You Tube channel. Now think about The Weekly Standard's sad, little 80,000 number (and how many of those people actually read the magazine?). And these clowns lose $5 million a year to run that operation. Spending over $5 million a year to reach 80,000 people? That amuses me.

Let me give you one last stat. The Young Turks is now averaging over 350,000 views a day on You Tube. That is more than four times The Weekly Standard's circulation. And we get that in just one day! And we do all of this at just a fraction of what they spend. How can they possibly compete with us in the long term?

The bottom line is that most of these conservative media outlets don't stand a chance. Sure, some will have staying power in representing a certain percentage of the population. Those are the ones that focus on opinions. But no one is taking their "news" operations seriously. On the other hand, a progressive colossus is rising on the web and the conservatives are powerless to stop it...

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison
"They have gotten away with obstructing by exploiting the filibuster and denying Justice Owen a direct vote. Now, unfortunately, we must take action to ensure President Bush's nominees are getting the up-or-down vote they deserve." (4/21/05 statement)

Sen. Orrin Hatch
"...I think we should bind both Democrats and Republicans that presidential nominees for the judiciary deserve an up-and-down vote once they reach the floor..." (Orrin Hatch discusses debate in Senate..., NPR, 5/19/05)

Sen. Jon Kyl
"All we seek is a return to 214 years of tradition in allowing presidential nominees the courtesy of an up-or-down vote." (Kyl Calls for `Up or Down' Vote on Judicial Nominees,' Capitol Hill Press Releases, 5/18/05)

Sen. Rick Santorum
"The time has come for the Senate to reestablish that tradition, to end these destructive judicial filibusters and to give all judicial nominees the up-or-down vote they deserve." (Should the Senate end Filibusters When Considering Judicial Appointments, Duluth News Tribune, 4/25/05)

Sen. Trent Lott
"...I felt they deserved up-or-down votes. It was not a popular action with my colleagues, but I didn't think it was right to filibuster judicial nominees then. And it's not right now." (Lott Sets the Record Straight on Judicial Confirmation Issue, 4/26/05)

Sen. John Cornyn
"And we need to get a fresh start. And that means, I believe, an up-or-down vote for all presidents' nominees whether they be Republican or Democrat." (U.S. Senator John Cornyn Holds a News Conference on Judicial Nominees, CQ Transcriptions, 5/9/05)

Sen. Mitch McConnell
"Let's get back to the way the Senate operated for over 200 years, up or down votes on the president's nominee, no matter who the president is, no matter who's in control of the Senate. That's the way we need to operate." (Senators Durbin & McConnell Discuss Issues Facing the Senate, CNN, 5/22/05)

Sen. Jeff Sessions
"This past election in large part hinged, as George Allen said, on a debate over the judiciary and whether or not obstruction was justified. I think the American people sent a clear message and I believe it's time for this Senate to make sure that judges get an up-or-down vote." (U.S. Sen. Allen & Other Senate Republicans Hold a Media Availability on the Possibility of a Democrat Filibuster, CQ Transcriptions, 3/15/05)

Sen. Richard Burr
"But denying these patriotic Americans, of both parties, who seek to serve this country an up-or-down vote is simply not fair, and it certainly was not the intention of our Founding Fathers when they designed and created this very institution." (Sen. Burr Speaks Out on Judicial Nominations, 4/20/05)

Sen. Sam Brownback
"All of the president's nominees-both now and in the future-deserve a fair up or down vote, regardless of whether some members of the Senate feel they can be filibustered based on whatever they define to be extraordinary circumstances." (Sen. Brownback Issues Statement on Judicial Nominees, 5/24/05)

Sen. John Thune
"However, I still believe that all judicial nominees with majority support deserve the fairness of an up or down vote on the Senate floor... Something is broken when you can't get a fair up or down vote, not because of qualifications or character, but because of politics." (Senators Find Good in Filibuster Agreement, AP, 5/24/05)

Sen. George Allen
"They want Senators to do their jobs and hold a straight up-or-down vote on nominees based on their qualifications, not the baseless negative rhetoric of the left...In summation, Priscilla Owen, Janice Rogers Brown, and all of the President's nominees, deserve a fair up-or-down vote." (U.S. Senator George Allen Deliver Remarks on the Senate Floor on Judicial Nominations, CQ Transcriptions, 5/18/05)

Sen. Chuck Hagel
"I am disappointed that the agreement reached by 14 senators does not guarantee up-or-down votes on all of the president's nominees...That is a basic principle that should have anchored any agreement." (Hagel Calls Senators' Pact Inadequate, Omaha World-Herald, 5/25/05)

Sen. Pete Domenici
"Since the day I came to the U.S. Senate in 1973, I have believed strongly that every nominee deserves an up or down vote. That is why over all these years, I have never once voted to filibuster any nominee, even the ones that I ended up opposing. I am truly saddened that the Senate has reached this point. We should resume our long-standing tradition of giving judicial nominees who reach the floor an up or down vote." (Sen. Domenici Laments Continued Judicial Filibusters, 5/19/05)

Sen. Charles Grassley
"The current obstruction led by Senate Democratic leaders threatens that balance. Priscilla Owen and Janice Rogers Brown deserve an up or down vote. It's high time to make sure all judges receive a fair up or down vote on the Senate floor." (Grassley: Give Judges a Fair Up or Down Vote, CQ, 5/23/05)

Sen. Wayne Allard
"I'd made my position clear. I wanted to have an up- or-down vote on the judges." (Freshman Salazar Stands with his Seniors, The Denver Post, 5/24/05)

Sens. Larry Craig and Mike Crapo
"We are pleased that three of the President's judicial nominees will receive fair up-or-down votes - it is about time. However, we continue to stress that the Constitution requires the Senate to hold up-or-down votes on all nominees. We will continue to work to ensure that is the case." (Craig, Crapo React to Judicial Nominees Deal, 5/25/05)

Sen. Ted Stevens
"I may not have always agreed with a judicial nominee pick, but I've never voted against cloture on a judicial nomination. There have been some petitions. And I've always agreed that we should allow an up-or-down vote on judicial nominations on the Senate floor. These nominees deserve our vote." (Press Conference on Judges, Federal News Service, 5/19/05)

Sen. Jim DeMint
"My goal is to confirm highly qualified judges by ensuring timely up-or-down votes for all nominees... Every nominee, no matter if the President is Democrat or Republican, deserves an up-or-down vote," (Sens. DeMint, Freshman GOP Call for end to Judicial Filibusters, 4/20/05)

Sen. Elizabeth Dole
"I think that it's very important that we reinstate the tradition, the Senate tradition, of 220 years, throughout the entire history of the United States. We've had a system that worked, that, when a nominee on the floor has a clear majority of the senators in favor, that they're going to get that up-or-down vote." (Interview with Senator Elizabeth Dole, The Big Story with John Gibson, 4/21/05)

Overall I'd give him a C.

I'd like to see improvement in these areas:

1. The financial crisis is being handled the same way as Bush handled it.

2. The president doesn't seem to want the return of the Fourth Admendment--FISA and state secrets issues.

3. The neocons seem to have a lot of influence on Afganistan and Iraq policy.

4. I wish more progressives were in the Cabinent and the inner circle.

Maybe someone can blog me down.

Dear Editor,

Columbus currently has a glut of sports and conservative talk radio stations. So 1460 AM would be the perfect home for Progressive Talkers such as Rachel Maddow, Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz and Ron Reagan. That lineup could be supplemented with an afternoon drive-time show hosted by Dispatch columnists Ann Fisher and/or Joe Blundo, and watch out WTVN.

The Progressive Talk format got much better ratings at 1230 AM than the format before and after it. Progressive Talk 1580 AM increased listenership each ratings period until Catholic Radio bought out the lease for the station.

The Wolfe family didn't have a problem making extra cash with the Obama Inaugural Special Editon papers so maybe this isn't such a stretch. Stephanie Miller packed the Makoy Center (capacity 1,800) at $20 a head, so there's money to be made with the proper sales and promotional support.

Franklin County votes 60% Democratic even though we get nothing but Republican propaganda over the public airwaves. Is it too much to ask for some opinion shows to reflect the will of a majority of the people or is this a Banana Republic?

Here is the roundup of rankings for the past year:

0.0 Oct-Dec 2007 (Autumn 2007) - Mexican Pop format
0.5 Jan-Mar 2008 (Winter 2008) - Progressive Talk format
0.7 Apr-Jun 2008 (Spring 2008) - Progressive Talk format
0.8 Jul-Sep 2008 (Summer 2008) - Progressive Talk format
1.0 Oct-Dec 2008 (Autumn 2008) - Progressive Talk format

I think the jump to 1.0 was facilitated by the Presidential Election and ads in The Other Paper.

Please contact WTDA 103.9 and express your feelings about Michael Savage comparing President Obama to Adolf Hitler.

From: Phil Burkhart
To: North American Broadcasting 103.9 WTDA
Subject: Cancel the Michael Savage Show

As a member of the Central Ohio community, I urge you to discontinue airing the Michael Savage show on your station. Savage has a history of engaging in hate speech, most recently directed at President Obama.

His on air comparisons of a sitting United States President to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party is unspeakable. As this is a free country, he has the right to speak his mind. As a citizen of this country I have the right to be disgusted by his vile remarks and demand that he be removed from the local air waves. I also have the right to send this letter to the local and national on air personalities who are aired by your station, along with your local advertisers and the FCC.

Your radio station, like all broadcasters, has an obligation to use the license that is provided by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to serve the public interest. Airing a radio program like the Michael Savage Show does not serve the public interest, therefore I urge you not to run this show or any others that promote hate speech.

Here's a transcript of Thom Hartmann explaining it:

So this was the goal: to strip America of small 'd' democracy and replace it with an autocracy. How to go about doing it? How do you achieve maximum power in a nation where the vast majority of the people would really rather not have a small group have maximum power? You do it with the Two Santa Claus Theory.

this was Barack Obama identifying, broadly speaking, the issue. He continued:

"This crisis did not happen solely by some accident of history or normal turn of the business cycle."

See, and this, this is such an important point. This was not a normal turn of the business cycle and it was not an accident of history. This was intentional. it started with a group of conservatives saying, you know, 'how can we do this? What can we, let's make this thing happen'.

This goes back to a guy named Jude Wanniski, who, back in the 70s, laid out the blueprint for this whole thing, for the theft of American government. He and Grover Norquist were the guys who really put this thing together. Jude Wanniski invented the term "supply side economics". It was a revolutionary thing.

As Robert Novak wrote in 2005 in Real Clear Politics, his column, his nationally syndicated column, he says, "The late supply-side pioneer Jude Wanniski wrote about two governmental Santa Clauses -- one bestowing spending increases and the other tax cuts. For 50 years until the supply-side revolution in the late 1970s, Republicans rejected both Santa Clauses and cemented their minority political status."

You get this? Historically, Republicans were opposed tax cuts. They thought that a balanced budget was a good thing. And historically the Republicans were opposed to government spending. Now, what Jude Wanniski did is, he came along and he said, 'you can, Republicans, you can now be in favor of tax cuts. You can be a Santa Claus to the American people, because we've invented this thing called the Laffer curve, and we've come up with this idea called 'supply side economics' that says if you cut taxes you're actually going to raise revenue.

It was a lie then, it's a lie now. It has never worked although it still has it's apologists out there. But this was one of the most despicable and intentional lies of the conservatives and the Republicans to gain power.

Cato Institute president Ed Crane in an article about Wanniski titled, "The GOP: Slouching towards Irrelevance" talked about how this guy gave it to the Republicans. He said, "When [U.S. Representatives]", now this was a decade or more ago he wrote this. "When [U.S. Representatives] Jack Kemp, New Gingrich, Vin Weber, Connie Mack and the rest discovered Jude Wanniski and Art Laffer, they thought they’d died and gone to heaven. In supply-side economics they found a philosophy that gave them a free pass out of the debate over the proper role of government. Just cut taxes and grow the economy... That’s why you rarely, if ever, heard Kemp or Gingrich call for spending cuts, much less the elimination of programs and departments."

And this is why this year, if you are an average tax payer in the United States, if you're making in the neighborhood of $45-50,000, about a thousand bucks of your federal tax bill is going to pay the interest on the money that Ronald Reagan borrowed following Jude Wanniski's and Grover Norquist's advice.About another $2,000 of the taxes that you're paying this year is going to pay the interest on the money that George Herbert Walker Bush, the first couple of years of the Clinton administration and George W Bush in particular borrowed, following the advice of Grover Norquist and Jude Wanniski.

If we don't understand how this happened, we can't fix it.

Upon my arrival at the board this morning, I was saddened that the board has taken Ed Schultz off the online broadcast schedule completely.

As one of the sponsors behind bringing Ed here last August, I am very disappointed with the decision. I am working to get Gary's attorney, Tony Logan, in touch with Big Eddie and his investors as far as plans to purchase 103.1, which is still up for grabs in spite of reports some former WCVO staffers plan to buy the frequency.

Ed Schultz has been the nation's leading progressive voice with at least 3 million listeners, according to Talkers magazine. The other leading voices in this format, including Stephanie Miller, have half the listenership. The voices you will hear on the online format tend to go further to the left. The goal for a successful station in the Columbus market is to have hosts that can grab people from the center and even the right, especially with the pending changes in the Columbus talk radio landscape.

The decision, along with the lack of customer sales during the time my commercials aired on WVKO, have resulted in my decision to once again go a separate direction. This will likely be my last posting on this board, and I will be putting my intended investment into maintaining this site into other marketing venues, including the Ed Schultz recession buster area of his website.

I'm sorry I have to be this harsh, but just like the deal that brought St. Gabriel Radio into the purchase of WVKO, this is a business decision. Unfortunately, my advertising on progressive talk radio has been at a financial loss well in excess of profit. I would've continued the support if Big Eddie were still part of the lineup.

Good luck to you.

Others in our group have previously expressed articulate critiques of NPR. I hope they will re-post them in this thread.

Here are some specific problems that I heard on a recent Open Line with Fred Anderle show. Fred recently had a panel of four economists. Here's how the show is descibed on the WOSU website:

"Our central Ohio economy - the good, the bad, and the ugly - with a panel of local economic experts: Columbus Chamber of Commerce Vice President of Economic Analysis Bill Lafayette, Red Capital Group Assistant Vice President Joseph Mandeville, Huntington Bancshares Vice President George Mokrzan, and Commerce National Bank Chief Economic Advisor James Newton."

Three of the economists work for financial firms. One for the Chamber of Commerce. All have corportist/libertarian viewpoints. But hey, no one on the panel openly expressed support for the Wall Street bailout. BTW, Bloomberg has reported that Huntington got a billion or two in TARP money from the government. Which seems kinda newsworthy---WOSU, Dispatch, Cabot Rea, Anybody?

Most importantly, what was missing was a labor economist!

The panel ridiculed the idea of the Keynesian answer of boosting the economy by boosting wages as Thom Hartmann talks about just about everyday. When the panel was questioned what could be done that would boost wages, no one mentioned passing the Employee Free Choice Act. Even though most Democrats, including Obama, openly support the Employee Free Choice Act and won big in the election.

My last critique. One of the economists opposes state and local tax incentives for companies to relocate which is admirable. He said that the huge tax incentives given to Honda in Marysville weren't worthwhile in the long run because of the lost state revenue and Honda's production has contributed to lost jobs at Ford, GM, Chrysler, etc.

Fred was very quick to counter that arguement by saying that surely the hand-outs given to Honda were worth all the jobs it created. Honda is a huge contibutor to WOSU. Coincidence?

I admire Fred's style and Socratic questioning of guests and callers (not so much questioning of conservative callers though).

Bottom line, there's a lot to be improved with our media. And, NPR is compromised to providing the whole truth.

There's a petition to show your support for Progressive Talk in Central Ohio, here:

http://www.wvko1580.com/ohio-majority-radio-petition/

It is not a petition to keep WVKO management from flipping the format from ProgTalk, because it is out of their hands. Rather, this petition is to show potential broadcasters that there is wide support for the format. It is also intended to be used to alert the petition signers where to tune on the dial when Progressive Talk shows pop up on the air.

The question is now 103.1 or 103.9?

If you listened to The Blue State Diner this morning, Gary Richards'
attorney mentioned there are discussions on the purchase of 103.1 FM.

Since the WVKO website will remain up, the show should be archived so
you can hear the comments from Tony.

So about my previous comments over on Ohio Majority Radio about getting Stephanie Miller and Ed Schutz on 103.9 during the evening hours, soon to be home for Michael Savage.

It doesn't mean holding off on talking with NABCO. It simply means
changing the approach.

I present to you what happened to Steph in Washington.

Momma aired live on what is now known as "Obama 1260," WWRC in
Washington. She moved to an evening time at 3WT along with Randi
Rhodes. Momma was moved live after the huge response. And when 3WT
flipped formats, Momma and the Goddess went back to 1260.

Thus, the approach I mentioned previously, if we can all unite on
this, will be a potential win-win.

If Momma does well on 103.9, she'll be moved live.

If Gary gets 103.1, she'll definitely be moved back live.

And it saves Columbus listeners from the Savage Weiner, which will
hurt more than help WTDA.

One way of another, we need to unite on a plan quickly. Savage should
be moving to 103.9 in a couple of weeks.

A final thought...borrowing from Jerry Springer:

You all know WCPT in Chicago, where WVKO got feeds originally for Bill
Press and Ed Schultz, airs dance music during nighttime hours on its
simulcasting FM stations.

If Gary can get 103.1, the Hispanic population will lose its only
remaining station. 1550 in Delaware is now oldies.

A hybrid format like WCPT may be worth considering here if it gets
progressive talk and high-school sports back on the air.

Then again, 1230 could certainly use a Salsa format. Clear Channel
did it Boston.

---------

I just thought of something which might work if Gary can pull this
off, especially if it gets progressive talk back on the air in a much
quicker fashion. How about this for a WCPT-type hybrid that I think
would make everyone happy?

The new weekday schedule would be:

Midnight to 6 a.m.--Spanish-language programming
6 a.m. to 9 a.m.--Mornings in the Blue State Diner hosted by Michael
Alwood, with regular appearances by Dr. Bob Fitrakis, Harvey
Wasserman, Micheal Daniels and Chris Hayes
9 a.m. to noon--Stephanie Miller
Noon to 3 p.m.--Ed Schultz or Thom Hartmann
3 to 6 p.m.--Thom Hartmann or Ed Schultz (yours truly back doing news)
6 to 7 p.m.--Rachel Maddow
7 p.m. to midnight--Spanish-language programming/high school sports

Weekends would again include Radio Outlook, Solartopia, Alvis Moore's
Gospel Sunday, The Working Man's Show, Urban Trendsetters and Purpose
Revealed and our favorite Air America shows (Ring of Fire, State of
Belief, Politically Direct, etc.) between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Spanish-language programming would run from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. unless
pre-empted by high school sports.

Needless to say, I'm looking for win-win situation here.

Thoughts?

P.S. I just spoke with Vern Thompson, Big Eddie's producer, to see if those investors looking at buying up stations are still in a buying mode. He'll be in touch with Gary.

St. Gabriel is the owner of WUCO 1270 in Marysville. It is a Catholic
broadcaster.

The rumor from the Radio-Info board is it wants our signal for a
presence in Columbus. The company's website is talking about
expanding with stations being built in southern Ohio.

Do I put any credibility behind this rumor? No.

However, the best way to confront the rumor is expose it and, in Dr.
Bob Fitrakis' words, fight back.

Of course, two immediate ways to show support are buying gifts for
yourself and others from our advertisers (including yours truly) and/or
making a gift to the station. I spoke with a media consultant earlier
tonight who likes the fact we have listeners who invest in the station.

By the way, I'm Catholic myself. My pastor, Father Larry Rice at the
St. Thomas More Newman Center, is featured on Catholic Radio Weekly
heard locally on WMNI. Why do I need Catholic radio when I can get
words of wisdom from Father Larry from both the pulpit and the podcast?

It's simply this---continue to patronize the advertisers that supported WVKO and WTPG. And thank them for their sponsorship of the Progressive Talk format.

My last newscast on WVKO aired tonight. While I will be joining Dr. Bob Fitrakis on his show Monday, the last day progressive talk will air, I now have to focus energies on where to go from here.

So let me fill you in a little more on what I meant if you heard about the talk overhaul taking place at another station in town.

Let's go back two years, shall we?

At the time Clear Channel announced its changes to WTVN and WYTS, the flip from progressive talk at 1230 was overshadowed by Glenn Beck leaving 610.

Well, WTDA is now losing Glenn Beck to WTVN, moving Bob and Tom to 99.7, and supposedly adding Dave Ramsey and Michael Savage (ugh!) to WTDA.

North American Broadcasting has an opportunity to snatch up Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz for WTDA. The company has a working relationship with the syndicator, Dial Global. It will also, as in the case of Beck, have a ready-made base of listeners and advertisers who supported Momma and Big Eddie at their Columbus appearances.

I'll be working with the Ohio Majority Radio group to rally for these two progressive voices to be added to WTDA's schedule. We just need to make sure we pose a united front for the two hosts who came here to support WVKO.

I know a number of you would like to get the Air America hosts back on the air. But as I have mentioned to some WVKO supporters already, just the discussion of Air America may prevent us from getting a foot in the door at the Dublin Road studios. (I know Randi Rhodes will agree on that.)

If you are not a member of the Ohio Majority Radio board on Yahoo!, I suggest you become a member. This will be our best means to communicate with each other regarding a plan of action. You can also reach me, as always, through my website, CleanLeft.com.

In closing, I want to thank those of you who offered kind words and shows of support during the time I did the afternoon news, and also during the time I was away from the microphone working overtime at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

For those of you who are feeling a little down, I also wanted to extend an invitation to you to join this gay Catholic on Christmas Eve for the Blue Christmas Mass at 8 p.m. at the St. Thomas More Newman Center, 64 West Lane Avenue. I will be one of the lectors.

The service will be conducted by Father Larry Rice, the Newman Center Director. Father Larry can be heard on Sundays on WMNI as part of the show "Catholic Radio Weekly" and also does a segment on a Catholic talk show on Sirius Satellite Radio. Most importantly, he has no connection with St. Gabriel Radio.

In closing, I quote John Wayne in a sound bite which has been used to open Rachel Maddow's show:

"The time has come for me to ride hard and fast."

Does anyone have a link for this newish advertisement I've been hearing on WVKO? It's an unassuming advertisement about changing the way we give... but I can't remember the website address. Anyone know what it is?
